This first day is designed exclusively for acclimatization. You’ll have the afternoon free to rest or take a light walk through the city, explore the traditional San Pedro Market, stroll through the cobblestone streets of San Blas neighborhood, and absorb the local energy that makes Cusco a unique place.

You’ll also have the necessary time to assemble your bike with the support of our mechanical team and participate in a technical briefing with your MTB guide, where we’ll review the complete itinerary, safety recommendations, and useful tips for pedaling at over 3,000 meters (9,843 ft) of altitude.

Maximum altitude: 3,400 m (11,155 ft)
Activities: Acclimatization, bike assembly, technical briefing

Day 2 – Huayllarcocha & Yuncaypata: Cusco Classics to Get Started

We begin the descent with natural flow: smooth curves, roots, small jumps, and rock gardens that allow you to let loose with confidence from day one. We make a brief stop at the enigmatic Temple of the Moon, an Inca ceremonial center carved in stone, charged with mystical energy and history.

We continue with a more technical section with natural berms and fast sections before transferring to Abra de Corao. From there we begin the descent through the legendary Yuncaypata trail, one of the favorites among local and foreign bikers. This trail is a true classic of Cusco enduro: Inca stairs, challenging singletracks, technical curves, fast zones, rock gardens, and sections surrounded by eucalyptus forests make it a complete and diverse experience.

Upon finishing the ride, we’ll head to a traditional restaurant to enjoy exquisite Peruvian gastronomy with a typical lunch that closes this first intense MTB day with a flourish.

After breakfast, we depart in our private transport from Urubamba heading to the Lamay district, from where we’ll begin our day.

We start with the Epic Trail – Huayafara, a fast, fluid route with a good dose of technique. This descent crosses Andean forest areas, natural steps, and sections with rock gardens, ideal for warming up. With shaded sections and slightly narrow terrain, this line is perfect for letting loose and getting into rhythm. The landscape is simply spectacular, with open views of the Sacred Valley and natural viewpoints that invite you to stop and breathe in the environment.

After a strategic pause, snack, and hydration, we move a few kilometers higher to face the day’s second route: the Epic Trail – Huama. This descent is more demanding, with rocky areas, tight corners, technical steps, and an impressive finish crossing a forest full of natural lines and loose dirt. With over 18 km in length and more than 1,500 meters (4,921 ft) of combined descent for the day, this route will test your control, technique, and endurance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About 9-Day MTB Expedition in Peru

What technical level do I need for this 9-day expedition?

This tour is designed for intermediate to advanced riders with previous experience in mountain biking, especially on enduro and downhill trails. You don’t need to be a pro, but you should feel confident riding on loose rocks, Inca stairs, tight switchbacks, berms, steep descents, and narrow sections.
If you’ve done some technical trails and have good control of your bike, you’ll be fine. This expedition is not recommended for beginners or those without prior mountain experience.

Can I rent a bike or should I bring my own?

Yes, you can rent a full-suspension enduro bike, which is included in the tour price. We work with brands like Commencal and Polygon, carefully adjusted for each rider.
If you prefer to bring your own bike, that’s totally fine—just consider the air transport cost, maintenance, and any specific spare parts. In case of a breakdown during the tour, we also offer a replacement bike (subject to availability).

How challenging is the altitude on this MTB route?

The expedition takes place between 2,430 m and 4,400 m (7,972 ft to 14,435 ft), which can affect breathing and endurance, especially in the first few days.
That’s why we include a full day of acclimatization in Cusco and a progressive itinerary to help your body adjust without overexertion.
We recommend arriving in Cusco at least one day before the tour starts, staying well hydrated, getting good sleep, and avoiding alcohol for the first 48 hours.

Is Machu Picchu included in the tour?

Yes. Day 4 is dedicated to a full visit to Machu Picchu. It includes:
– Round-trip train tickets
– Bus Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
– Official entrance ticket
– 2-hour guided tour with a certified cultural guide
You’ll also have free time to explore on your own or simply absorb the energy of this unique place. It’s not a rushed visit—it’s a key part of the experience.

What’s included in terms of food and drinks?

The tour includes 8 hotel breakfasts and 7 lunches (some as picnics, others in local restaurants), plus daily hydration during the rides: water, fresh fruit, and basic snacks.
You’ll also enjoy a craft beer toast by the Urubamba River.
Dinners, alcoholic beverages, and personal snacks are not included. If you have dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), just let us know in advance—we’ll adapt everything for you.

What kind of accommodation is included?

The package includes 8 nights in handpicked 3-star hotels chosen for their comfort, location, and bike-friendly services.
You’ll stay 6 nights in Cusco (Hotel Ayni Cusco or similar), 1 night in Aguas Calientes, and 1 night in Ollantaytambo.
All accommodations include hot showers, breakfast, a good night’s sleep, and secure bike storage. Private rooms are available upon request for an extra fee.

What kind of technical support and safety is provided?

Throughout the entire expedition, you’ll have:
– A bilingual professional MTB guide
– On-trail mechanic with tools and basic spare parts
– Private backup transport
– Radio communication system
All riders must have **mandatory travel insurance** that covers adventure sports and medical emergencies. Your safety is our top priority, and our team is trained to respond to any situation.

What should I pack for this 9-day MTB tour?

Bring layered technical clothing, helmet, gloves, sunscreen, UV sunglasses, hydration backpack or vest, original passport, personal hygiene items, and a GoPro if you have one.
The terrain is technical and the weather can change, so waterproof and thermal gear is recommended.
You can find the full checklist in the “Packing List” tab of the tour.
No need to bring spare parts if you’re renting the bike from us.

What happens if the weather gets really bad during a ride day?

Andean weather is unpredictable, but we stick to the itinerary unless extreme conditions occur (storms, landslides, etc.).
If there’s light rain or fog, we continue with the proper gear.
If needed, the guide will make decisions about alternative routes or breaks, always prioritizing the group’s safety. We have flexible logistics and transport ready at all times.

What’s the group size and what if I’m traveling solo?

We operate with small groups of 2 to 6 riders to ensure trail flow, better guide interaction, and a more personalized experience.
If you’re traveling solo, we can match you with another group on available dates or arrange a personalized departure with adjusted pricing.
Our goal is to offer you the best experience possible, whether in a group or in a private setup.
